The Dennis Family is not new to gospel music. They started their journey for the Lord some 30 years ago. They are members of First Missionary Baptist Church in their hometown of Millbrook, Alabama, just north of Montgomery, Alabama. They have served actively for more than 25 years. They are born-again, blood-bought children of the Lord, led of the Lord with an anointed message to spread.
One of the pioneers of the group, Paulette Dennis-Pynes, has been with the group right from the start. Their mother/grandmother, Dora Dorothy (Dot) Dennis, formed the group back in the late 60's along with Paulette and two other ladies. Dorothy went home to be with the Lord on February 15, 1991. Their brother/uncle, Joseph Timothy (Tim) Dennis, was a minister and an accomplished pianist and guitarist. The Lord called Tim home on February 29,1992 at the age of 35 years after having had 5 major open-heart surgeries. They have, over the years, had a few changes memberwise but, as God would have it, the group ended up with all family.
The second generation Dennis Family consists of Paulette Dennis-Pynes, her sister Millie Dennis-Brown, and Paulette's daughter, Denise Pynes-Weldon. They are charter members of Central Alabama Southern Gospel Music Association (CASGMA) which is based out of Montgomery, Alabama. They are honored to have been voted group of the year in 1997. They were nominated for group of the year in 1998 (top 3). Paulette was voted Alto of the Year 1997. Rex Weldon (Denise's husband) was voted Sound Technician for 1997. Denise was nominated in 1997 in top 3, as well as Millie. God was so good that in 1998, Denise was voted Lead Singer of the Year and Millie was voted Tenor of the Year. All of the members were nominated in the top 3 categories in 1998. Their response to CASGMA nominations was a very humbled one. They are quick to respond that the only star in their lives is Jesus Christ and without Him they are nothing. All the praise, honor and glory belong to God and His Son, Jesus.
There are other members who work extremely hard behind the scenes. Paulette's husband, Wheat, is the bus driver, manager, booking agent, mechanic; you name it, he does it. With God's blessing and guidance and Wheat's willingness to help further God's kingdom, he get's them to each destination. They do approximately 150 to 170 bookings each year. Wheat always lets people know that he cannot do it alone and that God is the only way he gets things done. Rex runs the sound for the group and also plays drums with The Dennis Family Band. The Band is used on special occasions. Millie's daughter, Shae Brown, is the Table Tech and Gofer Girl. Paulette's and Millie's sister, Dona Dennis-Brooks, is the group's secretary. It takes team effort to make things work. It takes everyone to do the job no matter how big or small.
The Dennis Family has had the privilege to grace the stage with most of the top groups in gospel music today. They have had the pleasure of making television appearances and radio shows throughout the Southeast. God is doing tremendous things through their ministry, for which God is glorified. Pastors, church leaders and laymen alike are astounded at the seasoned ministry of these ladies. If God does not prepare you, you cannot do the work (Luke 4:18). They are dedicated to spending their lives spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost, wounded and brokenhearted.
They are emerging as one of the church's most successful emissaries. They are capable of bridging the best of old music to the best of the new music, as well as the ability to write and perform their own music. On their latest project, Mountain Climber, the scores and lyrics were written by them. The title cut was written by Paulette through an article in the Singing News. Wow! What a song!! Train for Gloiy, which is a very upbeat song and surely to move you, was written by Denise. They also arranged the score on two of the songs on this project: What I Owe and Someday Soon, which were written by some very close friends of theirs. Other recordings to their credit are: God's Not Dead, with six songs written by Millie (Who Do Men Sayl Am was written by Tim); Heavenly Homecoming and The Bible Says So were written by other family members.
The Dennis Family has one prayer today. That each person they meet or anyone who hears them sing will be able to see and witness what lies within their hearts.. .the Lord, Jesus Christ. They want to thank God for everything and using them as a willing vessel to travel and meet friends they have never met before. Because to be a partner in Christ, you have to be a friend, and it is an honor to meet good people and share the grace of God. God's people should have joy in their heart and wake up and be happy that they are serving God and have an inheritance to the kingdom of God.
